Blackjack Buster Bet — Payouts, Odds & House Edge
Buster Blackjack is a side bet that the dealer will bust — and pays more the more cards it takes them to do it. It is appealing because the dealer busts often (~28%), but the payouts are structured to keep a steep house edge.
How it pays
Buster is settled on the dealer's hand only. A typical paytable escalates with the dealer's busted card count:
- 3–4 cards — 2:1
- 5 cards — 4:1
- 6 cards — 18:1
- 7 cards — 50:1
- 8+ cards — 250:1
Some versions add a bonus when you hold a blackjack and the dealer busts. Paytables vary widely by provider, so the table posted matters a lot.
Odds and house edge
The dealer busts about 28% of the time, but most busts are the low-paying 3–4 card kind, while the big multipliers are rare. On common paytables the house edge runs roughly 6% to 18% depending on deck count and the schedule — far above the ~0.5% of the base game with basic strategy.
It doesn't change your play
Like every side bet, Buster is resolved on the dealer's hand independently of your decisions, so your correct hit/stand/double play and the EV of each action are unchanged:
It is a high-variance bet on chaos, not an edge. Compare it with 21+3 and Perfect Pairs, and keep your bankroll on the base hand.
